From a very young age, I struggled to learn. In fact, my learning disability was so pervasive I was put on an IEP at the beginning of first grade. While others were learning to read, I struggled to identify letters. However, with this said, I never quit trying, believing I could achieve. I created my own personal strategies that helped me in my studies.
I've always wanted to learn, yet teachers didn't always understand that I learned differently. Because of my learning disability, I was slower in my learning, yet I still wanted so desperately to grasp the material. School was very frustrating at times because teachers were on strict timelines, speeding through material, not caring if content was grasped. This was not the way I learned.
It wasn't until my parents introduced me to online learning that I became excited about learning again.
Funny thing... my pace actually allowed me to graduate in 3 years instead of 4. It wasn't that I didn't want to learn, it was that traditional classrooms didn't allow the non-traditional student the chance to learn. Entering an online school also allowed me to continue to train for taekwondo with my rigorous schedule of 2 or 3 times a day. This strict training schedule, made possible because of attending school online, opened the doors to making the AAU U.S. National Team...
Over the past 2 years, online learning has provided me with the support and encouragement I needed to be a straight-A student, an elite athlete that travels around the world to compete in taekwondo, and accepted into a dual major of computer science/computer engineering at St. John's University.
